President Mahama launches ‘Mahama Cares’, appeals to corporate Ghana for support

Ghana has launched a new health initiative — the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, branded as Mahama Cares — to support patients battling chronic illnesses such as kidney failure, cancer, and heart conditions.

The fund was officially unveiled at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

President John Dramani Mahama called on the private sector to contribute to the fund as part of their corporate social responsibility. He highlighted that the initiative would benefit the very clients, customers, and employees of businesses operating in Ghana.

“This fund is for your own — your clients, your workers, your neighbours. I urge corporate Ghana to dedicate a portion of their CSR budgets annually to this cause,” President Mahama said.

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh described the initiative as long overdue. He said a draft bill to regulate the fund is ready and will be laid before Parliament when it resumes.

“The uncapping of the National Health Insurance Fund has released significant resources that will now support the Mahama Care Programme,” he added.

The Mahama Cares fund aims to reduce financial burdens on patients and improve access to lifesaving treatments, especially for underprivileged citizens.

“This Ghana Medical Trust Fund is coming to your clients… your own staff. It will do a lot of good to the country.” — President Mahama
