Ghana’s Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES), has released the official guidelines and criteria for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) School Selection Exercise.
According to the statement, the training of headteachers and teachers must be completed by Friday, July 31, 2026. The actual school selection exercise is expected to commence immediately after the training and end on Friday, August 7, 2026.
Candidates are required to select a total of eight (8) Senior High Schools (SHSs), Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs), STEM schools, or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. They are expected to choose:
- Two (2) Category A schools – selecting one as Boarding and the other as Day.
- Three (3) Category B schools – selecting two as Boarding and one as Day.
- Three (3) Category C schools – selecting two as Boarding and one as Day.
For each school selected, candidates must also indicate the programme of study they wish to pursue.
NOTE: Candidate can choose all the 8 schools from Category C
Headteachers have been encouraged to work closely with parents or guardians throughout the school selection exercise to ensure that candidates make informed choices. Students have also been advised to consider their academic performance carefully when selecting their preferred schools to increase their chances of gaining admission to their chosen institutions.
