The Ministry of Education was established in 1957 under Civil Service Law 327. It is mostly shortened or abbreviated as MoE.
The Ministry of Education is responsible for all policies on education, including apprenticeships and wider skills acquisition in Ghana. The MoE is supposed to provide education which at the end of the day will ensure that opportunity is equal for all, no matter what their background or family circumstances.
The Ministry formulates and coordinates education policies, set standards, and monitor and evaluate their implementation. It is responsible for ensuring that quality education is accessible for all Ghanaians, in order to support human capital and national development.
It is expected that the MoE commits itself to ensuring that all Ghanaians are prepared to succeed in the world of work. this can be achieved by the ministry through the development of an educational system that focuses on promoting problem solving and creativity and building critical skills through academic, technical and vocational programs.
The goal of the MoE is to make quality education readily accessible to all Ghanaians.

Education Financing and Budgeting: It is responsible for allocating and managing financial resources for education, ensuring adequate funding for various educational programs, infrastructure development, and initiatives.

The ADVISORY BOARD for the Ministry of Education, Ghana
By law, all sector Ministers must form/constitute a Ministerial Advisory Board for their respective ministries, tasked with providing counsel on pertinent matters. This Board serves to foster continual engagement between the Ministry and its service beneficiaries while offering guidance to the Minister on policy adjustments, planning goals, and operational approaches. The Board is constituted with the following personalities/membership;
- The Minister as the Chairman.
- The Deputy Minister(s) of the Ministry.
- The Chief Director
- The Chairman of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Council.
- The Director-General of the GES.
- A representative of the National Council on Tertiary Education (NCTE).

Who is the Current Minister of Education in Ghana?
Currently, Honorable Haruna Iddrisu is the Ministry of Education in Ghana. He took over office from Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum who served as Minister during the NPP’s second term of office.
Hon. Iddrisu is also the current Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South Constituency in the Tamale Municipal of the Northern Region of Ghana. He has been an MP for the constituency since 2005, all on the ticket of the NDC party.
