Miss Salomey Kwabea Agyei, a dedicated and passionate 37-year-old teacher at Kofiko M/A Junior High School, is preparing to make history by attempting to break the Guinness World Record for continuous reading. This ambitious endeavor of 7-day read-a-thon, is set to take place from Saturday, May 25, 2024, to Friday, May 31, 2024. Her goal is to break the current record, which stands at five days and six hours.
Miss Salomey’s mission goes beyond personal achievement; it is deeply rooted in her commitment to promoting girl-child education and raising awareness about the importance of literacy in her community. By embarking on this reading marathon, she aims to highlight the transformative power of education, especially for young girls who often face significant barriers to their educational pursuits. Through her efforts, she hopes to inspire a new generation of girls to value education and pursue their dreams with determination and confidence.
In addition to promoting girl-child education, Miss Salomey’s read-a-thon has another crucial objective: to mobilize financial and material support for the completion of the Regional Library in Sunyani. Libraries are vital resources for communities, providing access to knowledge, fostering a love of reading, and offering a safe space for learning. The completion of the Sunyani Regional Library will significantly enhance educational resources available to the community, supporting students, teachers, and lifelong learners alike.
The significance of this event has garnered widespread support from various stakeholders. The Jaman South Municipal Director of the Ghana Education Service, Mr. John Gasu, has expressed his full support, stating that the entire teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as all pupils in Jaman South, are united in their encouragement of Miss Salomey’s endeavor. Their collective backing highlights the community’s recognition of the importance of this initiative and their belief in Miss Salomey’s ability to succeed.
The Bono Regional Librarian, Alhassan Abdul-Faili, has pledged his institution’s full support towards the project. He has committed to providing additional books and resources to be used during the read-a-thon, ensuring that Miss Salomey has everything she needs to maintain her reading pace and break the record. This support is critical, as it highlights the collaborative effort required to achieve such an ambitious goal and the shared vision of promoting literacy and education within the community.
Venue for the Read-a-thon
The read-a-thon will take place at the Sunyani Regional Library, a fitting venue given its central role in the project’s objectives. The library will serve as both the physical and symbolic heart of this endeavor, representing the culmination of community efforts to enhance educational resources and promote a culture of reading.
As the start date of May 25, 2024, approaches, anticipation and excitement continue to build within the community. Supporters are organizing various activities to rally behind Miss Salomey, including fundraising events, awareness campaigns, and community reading sessions. These efforts aim to create a supportive environment that will sustain her throughout the 7-day read-a-thon.
