The Government of Ghana has announced a groundbreaking initiative to provide free tertiary education for students with disabilities. This announcement was made by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Parliament House.

President Mahama emphasized that this policy will cover all tertiary students with disabilities from Level 100 until they complete their studies. He highlighted that the initiative aims to ease the financial burden on persons with disabilities and ensure they have equal access to higher education. According to him, education is a key tool for empowerment, and this move is part of the government’s broader commitment to promoting inclusivity and social equity.

The President acknowledged the financial hardships many students with disabilities face, which often hinder their ability to complete higher education. He stressed that this intervention is designed to motivate and support them in achieving academic and professional success.

Mr. Mahama further encouraged persons living with disabilities to take full advantage of the opportunity and pursue their educational ambitions without financial constraints. He assured that the government, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, will ensure the smooth implementation of the policy to maximize its impact.
