Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey Appointed Commonwealth Secretary-General

Ghanaian lawyer and politician who has served as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in 2017 has been appointed to the high office of the Commonwealth.

Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has been appointed as the new Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations. Her selection was confirmed by Heads of Government on the final day of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent and equal sovereign states. It’s combined population is 2.7 billion, of which more than 60 per cent is aged 29 or under.

Outgoing Secretary-General, the Rt Hon. Patricia Scotland KC, congratulated Hon. Botchwey on her new role, marking a historic transition in the leadership of the 56-member organization.

At CHOGM 2024, leaders reviewed progress on key global issues, reaffirming commitments to tackling economic, environmental, and security challenges, while promoting sustainable trade and inclusive growth. At the event it was also announced that Antigua and Barbuda will host the next CHOGM in 2026.
