Six Convicted in Payroll Fraud Case in Tamale

Six individuals have been convicted by the High Court in Tamale over a payroll corruption scandal involving ghost names and fraudulent salary payments within the Ghana Education Service (GES).

The convictions followed guilty pleas through the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) plea bargaining scheme. As part of the settlement, all funds were fully recovered and returned to the State.

The convicted persons including school heads, payroll officers, and accountants were found to have unlawfully validated and reactivated the salary of a teacher who had abandoned his post. Their actions resulted in illegal payments amounting to over GHS 86,000. In total, GHS 106,319.64 has now been retrieved.

The OSP says it is still pursuing more suspects in the wider investigation and has six other criminal trials ongoing in Accra, Kumasi, and Tamale.
