Hull City Stun Manchester United 2-0 in Premier League Opener

Newly promoted Hull City have made a stunning return to the Premier League, defeating Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium in their opening match of the 2026/27 campaign.

Hull produced a ruthless first-half performance to secure all three points, scoring twice before the break and then withstanding sustained pressure from Manchester United in the second half.

Nigeria’s Semi Ajayi puts Hull ahead

Hull took the lead in the 17th minute through Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi.

Ajayi reacted quickest to a corner from Regan Slater before firing into the net to give the home side a 1-0 advantage.

Manchester United struggled to turn their possession into clear-cut chances, despite controlling much of the attacking play as the first half progressed.

Nobel Mendy doubles the lead

Hull struck again in the 38th minute, with Nobel Mendy heading home a cross from Regan Slater.

The goal gave Hull a commanding 2-0 lead heading into the break and left Manchester United facing an uphill battle in the second half.

United made an attacking change at half-time, bringing on Marcus Rashford for Patrick Dorgu as they looked for a way back into the game.

Manchester United dominate but fail to score

Manchester United pushed forward relentlessly after the interval, but Hull’s defence remained organised and protected their two-goal advantage.

United introduced Kobbie Mainoo, Benjamin Sesko, Diogo Dalot and Shea Lacey during the second half as they attempted to change the game.

Despite the pressure and increased attacking presence, Manchester United could not find a breakthrough.

Hull also made a number of changes as manager Sergej Jakirovic looked to protect the lead, including withdrawing both goalscorers during the second half.

Hull hold on for famous victory

The final whistle confirmed a 2-0 victory for Hull City, giving the newly promoted side a dream start to life back in the Premier League.

The result will be particularly disappointing for Manchester United, who dominated possession and created significant pressure after half-time but were unable to find the finishing touch.

Full-time

Hull City 2 – 0 Manchester United

17′ – Semi Ajayi
38′ – Nobel Mendy

Hull City therefore begin their Premier League campaign with three points, while Manchester United leave the MKM Stadium empty-handed.

The result also provides an early warning to the rest of the Premier League: Hull City are back, and they are not here simply to make up the numbers.
