GES Issues Directive to SHTS Headteachers on the Use of Their Schools as BECE Centres

GES directive to SHTS Headteachers on BECE

The management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially outlined new directives for Senior High/Senior High Technical Schools (SHS/SHTS) that will be used as examination centres for the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

According to a official letter signed by Mr. Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division (Secondary), on behalf of the Director-General, the BECE is scheduled to take place from 4th May to 11th May 2026.

The letter was addressed to all Regional Directors of Education, who are then expected to communicate the instructions to heads of schools within their respective regions.

Here is a breakdown of the key directives issued by the GES to headteachers:

1. Engagement of Students
According to the directive, heads of schools are to ensure that continuing students are meaningfully engaged in alternative activities during the BECE period. The GES stipulates that such activities should not require the use of classrooms that will be designated for the examination. School administrators are expected to take appropriate measures to maintain order and productivity among students throughout this period.

2. Use of Dormitories
The letter also addresses accommodation concerns. In schools where dormitory facilities will be used to accommodate BECE candidates, heads are directed to grant a short break to Form 1 and Form 2 students. According to the GES, this measure is necessary to ease congestion and ensure adequate space for the candidates who will be writing the exam.

3. Resumption of Students
To ensure minimal disruption to the academic calendar, the GES has stated that affected students (those sent on break) are expected to resume immediately after the BECE period to continue academic work without disruption.

Why These Measures?
According to the official statement, these measures are necessary to ensure a smooth and well-organised conduct of the examination while maintaining the welfare and discipline of students.

The GES has urged all Regional Directors to ensure strict compliance by the SHTS within their jurisdiction with these directives as the nation prepares for the 2026 BECE.
