Rinsola Babajide sparked an emotional moment at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2025, as he paid tribute to the late Diogo Jota after finding the net against Tunisia. The former Liverpool Women’s winger, representing Nigeria’s Super Falcons, scored a sublime second goal in their 3‑0 triumph and celebrated with Jota’s iconic binocular gesture with homage that resonated deeply amid widespread mourning.
Jota tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain on July 3, 2025 which prompted outpour of grief across the football world. Babajide had previously played for Liverpool Women’s team and openly supported her former club’s players throughout this difficult period.
On July 6, 2025, in their Group B opener at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Babajide delivered a standout performance as she set up the first goal for Asisat Oshoala in the fourth minute and then converted her own chance just before half‑time. Her tribute celebration brought a moving blend of respect and solidarity.
Nigeria’s head coach, Justine Madugu, later substituted Babajide, preserving her legs for the tournament ahead, but not before the team completed the rout when Chinwendu Ihezuo netted in the 84th minute.
The historic 3‑0 win marked Nigeria’s first-ever victory over Tunisia in WAFCON, extending the Super Falcons’ unbeaten record against North African opposition. The result places Nigeria at top of Group B as they builds momentum ahead of their next clash with Botswana on July 10.
Babajide’s poignant tribute serves as a compelling reminder of football’s power to unite and heal, transcending borders even amid grief.
