The Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), formerly known as the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), has issued a strong call for immediate measures to address the rising tide of indiscipline in senior high schools across the country.
In a press statement dated Tuesday, 20th May 2025, the association expressed deep concern over violent incidents that continue to threaten the safety of teachers and students. These include attacks on teachers, gun possession by students, robberies, and deadly altercations within school premises.
PRETAG cited several alarming cases: a student shot in the eye by a colleague at Adventist Senior High School in Kumasi; a teacher at Asuoso Community Senior High rendered permanently blind after a brutal attack; and a student at Osei Kyerewtey Senior High caught with a locally manufactured firearm. Another tragic case involved a 19-year-old student at O’really Senior High who allegedly killed a classmate following a dispute about whose parent was wealthier.
The association, now operating as a registered labour union, referenced International Labour Organization Convention No.190, which recognises workplace violence and harassment as serious threats. It condemned what it called the “deafening silence” of the Ghana Education Service (GES), warning that teacher safety and welfare are being pushed into the background.
PRETAG’s statement outlined several urgent recommendations. These include immediate action from the Ministry of Education and GES to tackle the root causes of school indiscipline, stronger involvement of parents in moral upbringing, fair compensation for victimised teachers, tighter school security, balanced public discourse on human rights, and adequate staffing in boarding schools.
PRESS-RELEASE-ON-STUDENTS-INDISCIPLINE-It concluded by stating that reports from PRETAG’s Regional Councils indicate that such incidents are widespread, and that urgent steps are needed to protect lives, restore discipline, and safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s education system.
