The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) have expressed their support for the Ghana Education Service (GES) assurance to automatically adjust the salaries of teachers who have been newly promoted.
In a letter dated 27th August 2026, the three teacher unions commended the GES for its assurance that all newly promoted teachers would be placed automatically on their respective grades and salary scales in accordance with their new ranks.
The unions’ statement follows a press release issued by the GES on 22nd August 2026, referenced GES/HQ/PR/26/155, concerning the automatic placement of newly promoted teachers on the appropriate salary scales.
According to the teacher unions, the GES’ assurance is consistent with the practice that has existed since 2020. Under this practice, teachers who are promoted to new ranks are expected to be automatically placed on the appropriate salary scale to reflect their new positions.
Teacher Unions Commend GES
The unions welcomed the position taken by the GES and described it as a continuation of the existing arrangement for newly promoted teachers.
They noted that automatically placing teachers on the appropriate salary scales would ensure that their remuneration reflects their newly acquired ranks after successful promotion.
The unions further stressed that any attempt to change or undermine the existing practice would be strongly resisted.
According to them, teachers, their unions, and other relevant stakeholders would not accept any attempt to forcefully impose a different arrangement without adequately considering the concerns of teachers and their representatives.
Call for Automatic Placement by August 31
The three unions have therefore called on the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure that all newly promoted teachers are automatically placed on the appropriate salary scales in line with their new ranks.
They specifically urged the GES to complete the process by the close of Monday, 31st August 2026, as promised in its earlier communication.
The unions’ position is expected to bring some relief to teachers who have successfully gone through the promotion process and are awaiting the corresponding salary adjustments.
The letter was signed by Thomas T. Musah, General Secretary of GNAT; Jacob Anaba, President of NAGRAT; and King Ali Awudu, President of PRETAG.
Newly promoted teachers will therefore be watching closely for the implementation of the automatic placement and salary adjustment process ahead of the 31st August 2026 deadline stated by the teacher unions.
