His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has appointed Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA). The announcement was made in a press release issued on Thursday, January 23, 2025, by the Office of the President.
This appointment is significant as it marks the first time in the history of the NCA that a Director-General has been selected from within the organization. The decision reflects confidence in internal talent and underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging expertise cultivated locally.
Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko is not only a seasoned professional but also a Minister of the Methodist Church Ghana and an accomplished author. His educational background is remarkable. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), a master’s degree in Communications Management from Buckinghamshire New University, England, and an MPhil in Applied Business Leadership and Management from Universidad Católica de Murcia, Spain.
As a member of both the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Rev. Ing. Fianko brings a wealth of expertise to his new role. With over two decades of experience in radio frequency spectrum management, ICT research, telecom and broadcasting regulation, policy formulation, teaching, and publishing, he is well-positioned to drive the NCA’s strategic agenda.
Rev. Ing. Fianko began his journey at the NCA in 2004 as a National Service Person. Over the years, he climbed the ranks, ultimately becoming the Director of the Engineering Division in January 2024. In this capacity, he successfully led teams in managing, licensing, and monitoring radio frequency spectrum for Ghana’s telecommunications and broadcasting services.
He succeeds Dr. Joe Anokye and is expected to steer Ghana’s communications industry toward greater technological advancement and growth. This appointment is widely seen as a step toward fostering innovation and excellence within the sector.
