Minister of Education Inaugurates 13-Member Committee to Overhaul Kindergarten to Primary School Curriculum

The Minister of Education has inaugurated a 13-member expert committee to lead a comprehensive review of Ghana’s curriculum from Kindergarten (KG) to Basic Six, in a bid to reshape early education to meet the demands of the 21st century.

Chaired by Professor Amina Plummer, the committee brings together some of Ghana’s most experienced education stakeholders, including policymakers, curriculum experts, and child development professionals. Members include Mamle Andrews, Chief Director of the Ministry of Education; Prof. George K.T. Oduro, Technical Advisor to the Education Minister; Prof. Yayra Dzakadzie, Director-General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA); and Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.

Also on the committee are Prof. Azeko Salifu Tahiru, Inspector of Schools; Prof. Christian Addai-Poku, Registrar of the National Teaching Council; Dr. Eric Adzore, Director-General of the Ghana TVET Service; and several senior directors from the Ministry of Education, including Nana Baffour Awuah, Rejoice Dankwa, Insah Shirzu, and Mavis Asare Donkor. Education consultant Dr. Samuel Awuku also joins the team.

Speaking during the inauguration in Accra, The Education Minister, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu stressed the national importance of the task, declaring that education was the bedrock of Ghana’s future.

“If we get it right in education, we will get it right as a country,” he said.

The Minister noted that the curriculum review was not merely a technical update but a visionary transformation, aimed at equipping Ghana’s children with holistic, future-ready skills. He emphasized the need to incorporate critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, adaptability, and teamwork into foundational learning.

Mr. Iddrisu further stated that the revised curriculum must move beyond academic knowledge to prepare young learners for a rapidly changing, digitally-driven, and interconnected world. He called on the committee to infuse the curriculum with Ghanaian and African cultural values, encouraging learners to embrace their heritage and identity with pride.

It’s time our children learn that Africa always has something to offer—not just in terms of survival, but brilliance, culture, and innovation,” the Minister added.

He also urged the committee to prioritize national values such as honesty, respect, patriotism, and civic responsibility, and to design a curriculum grounded in real-life relevance.

In a bold directive, the Minister called on the committee to use the curriculum review as an opportunity to resolve the longstanding debate over Ghana’s founding father. “I don’t want Ghanaian children to grow up not knowing who the nation’s founding fathers are or who its foundational leader was,” he declared. “Your review must settle the debate.”

The committee is expected to consult broadly and deliver a modernized curriculum that reflects both global educational trends and Ghana’s national aspirations. The review process will be supported by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and other relevant education agencies.

Mr. Iddrisu concluded by expressing his appreciation to the committee members for their willingness to serve the country at such a critical time in its educational development.
