The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made a significant donation of over $14 million to Côte d’Ivoire for successfully hosting the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This donation, according to reports, was drawn from CAF’s legacy fund, with the exact amount recorded at $14,210,584.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized that the funds are intended for the development of football in Côte d’Ivoire. He noted that this contribution is part of CAF’s commitment to ensuring that host nations of AFCON benefit long-term from the tournament, not just in terms of infrastructure but also in developing football talent and enhancing sports facilities.
The 2023 AFCON took place from January 13, 2024 to February 11, 2024, with Côte d’Ivoire serving as the host nation. The tournament featured 24 teams and was spread across six stadiums in the country, offering a vibrant display of football talent and culture from across Africa. The competition saw intense matches and excitement, drawing significant attention both locally and internationally.
It was historic to note that the Ivorian National Team both hosted and won the tournament. Their victory brought immense pride to the country, making it a joyful moment in Ivorian football.
