Nana Akufo-Addo, the former President of Ghana, on Thursday, 20th February 2025, had the honor of being invited by the Board of Trustees of the IBB Presidential Library Foundation.

As part of the invitation, he was tasked with delivering the keynote address at the historic launch of A Journey in Service, the long-awaited autobiography of one of Africa’s most distinguished military statesmen, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, in Abuja, Nigeria.

In his address, the former President expressed his deep disappointment over the resurgence of military coups in the West African region. He lamented that such unconstitutional takeovers are increasingly being viewed as solutions to instability caused by jihadist activity in the Sahel, economic hardships, or unpopular government policies.

He stressed that the fight to build and consolidate democratic structures must continue, as sustained democracy is essential for securing public confidence. He emphasized that prosperity would be achieved more effectively and enduringly through democratic governance rather than military rule.

Akufo-Addo urged West African and African nations to remain resolute in upholding multi-party democracy, asserting that after years of debate, experimentation, and hesitation, it has proven to be the most suitable governance model for the continent.

He further emphasized the need for African unity, calling on nations to rise above political and ideological differences to foster mutual understanding and cooperation for the collective development of the continent.
