GNAT Criticises Government Over 7,000 Teacher Recruitment Amid Rising Graduate Unemployment

The Ghana National Association of Teachers has strongly criticised the government’s decision to recruit only 7,000 teachers, despite over 100,000 qualified graduates reportedly awaiting employment across the country.

According to GNAT, the move fails to reflect the urgent need to absorb the growing number of trained teachers who remain jobless. The association argues that the limited recruitment could deepen frustration among graduates and worsen unemployment in the education sector.

GNAT President, Prosper Tachie Esq., described the decision as unfortunate, stressing that it does not match the scale of the challenge facing the country. He noted that many qualified teachers have waited for years without postings.

He further called on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and ensure that recruitment numbers are increased to accommodate more graduates. According to him, expanding the intake will not only reduce unemployment but also improve teacher distribution in schools.

The association believes that many schools across Ghana still face teacher shortages, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Increasing recruitment, GNAT argues, would help bridge these gaps and enhance the quality of education.

Education stakeholders have also echoed concerns about the imbalance between teacher training output and employment opportunities, calling for long-term planning and better alignment between training institutions and national workforce needs.

As discussions continue, many affected graduates are watching closely, hoping for decisive action that will open doors for them into the teaching profession.
