Ghana Reduces Cocoa Prices by Over GH₵1,000 per 64kg Bag

Cocoa Prices Reduction in Ghana

Ghana’s cocoa sector is facing a difficult period. On Thursday, February 12, 2026, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced a reduction in the cocoa producer price from GH₵3,625 to GH₵2,587 per 64kg bag, a cut of GH₵1,038 per bag, effective immediately for the 2025/2026 crop season. The move, recommended by the Producer Price Review Committee, aims to align Ghana’s pricing with falling global cocoa prices and ease cash flow challenges.

The decision followed an emergency Cabinet meeting convened by President John Dramani Mahama on February 11, 2026. Global cocoa prices have dropped significantly, affecting Ghana’s competitiveness. The government says the adjustment is necessary to stabilize the sector and ensure timely payments to farmers.

Smallholder farmers have expressed concern, as the reduction impacts their income while production costs remain high. The government is also implementing reforms, including a new Cocoa Board Bill, increased local processing, and domestic cocoa bonds, to make the sector more sustainable and transparent.
