The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has referred the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, to the Privileges and Immunities Committee for acting contrary to an adopted resolution of Parliament.
In a statement, the Speaker indicated:
“Having reviewed the complaint, the Standing Orders, and the governing principles, I am satisfied that the matter raised is prima facie and implicates the dignity and institutional integrity of this House. Pursuant to Order 34(1), I therefore refer the complaint lodged by the Hon. Member for Bawku Central and Majority Leader to the Committee on Privileges and Immunities for examination, inquiry, investigation, and report to the House.”
It would be recalled that on Tuesday, 11th November 2025, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, made a formal complaint against the Minority Leader, alleging that he engaged in conduct which, if substantiated, may constitute contempt of Parliament and a breach of parliamentary privilege, pursuant to Orders 30 and 31 of the Standing Orders.
According to Hon. Ayariga, Hon. Afenyo-Markin attended a session of the ECOWAS Parliament in contravention of a duly adopted resolution of the House, which excluded his name from Ghana’s delegation to the sub-regional parliament.
The Privileges and Immunities Committee has been tasked to investigate the matter and present its recommendations to Parliament.
