Accra Hearts of Oak Withdraws from EKO Tournament

Accra Hearts of Oak has announced its withdrawal from the upcoming EKO International Tournament in Lagos, Nigeria, citing concerns over player welfare and scheduling conflicts.

The prestigious Ghanaian football club was initially set to participate in the competition scheduled for July 6 –13. However, after the tournament was rescheduled to July 13 –20, it clashed with the club’s carefully planned rest and recovery period ahead of their pre-season training.

In a statement released by club management on Tuesday, July 8, Hearts of Oak explained the decision was made in consultation with their technical team to “protect the well-being of our squad.” The club described the withdrawal as “difficult but necessary,” adding that adequate recovery time is essential to their pre-season preparation and long-term success.

“We sincerely apologise to the organisers and our fans who were looking forward to seeing the team in action,” the statement read.

The club will officially go on break on Wednesday, July 8, and is expected to resume later in the month to begin preparations for a busy August schedule. Upcoming fixtures include the GHALCA Top 4 (August 15–19), the Homowo Cup (date to be confirmed), and the Democracy Cup against Great Olympics on August 28.

Hearts of Oak expressed appreciation to supporters and encouraged fans to stay engaged through official channels for updates on training and player signings.
