“Government Allocates GH¢40 Million to Support Young Public Universities” – Minister for Education

The Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that government, through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), has earmarked GH¢40 million as seed capital to support the growth and development of four newly established public universities in Ghana.

The Minister emphasised that, the universities benefiting from this funding are the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS), the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), and the S.D. Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SD-UBIDS). Each of these institutions, according to the Minister, plays a strategic role in Ghana’s educational and national development agenda.

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu made the announcement on Saturday, 21st June 2025, during the 5th Congregation Ceremony of CKT-UTAS in Navrongo, in the Upper East Region. Addressing graduates, staff, and dignitaries, he noted that the funding is a deliberate intervention to strengthen the academic and research foundations of these emerging institutions.

The Minister stated that the GH¢40 million would be invested in expanding infrastructure, improving digital learning tools, supporting research activities, and upgrading teaching and learning environments. He stressed that with adequate investment, these institutions can become hubs of innovation, training, and opportunity for future generations.

“This government is fully committed to nurturing our young public universities, ensuring they have the necessary resources to provide quality education that meets the demands of our evolving economy,” Hon. Haruna Iddrisu

He also urged the leadership of the universities to use the funds responsibly and strategically, adding that transparency and accountability would be key to sustaining future support. The Minister further encouraged the institutions to explore partnerships with the private sector, development agencies, and alumni to diversify funding sources and build resilience.

The announcement was met with optimism by the university community and stakeholders present. Many described the support as timely, especially as these institutions work to overcome infrastructural and resource challenges. Graduating students expressed hope that the government’s renewed focus on higher education would create better opportunities for academic growth, innovation, and job creation across the country.
