On May 6, 2025, Patrick Ngala, a 36-year old football referee was tragically killed by an angry mob in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after being accused of theft without any substantiated evidence. The mob set him ablaze, resulting in his death.
This incident highlights the growing trend of mob justice in Bukavu, where residents are frustrated by the perceived ineffectiveness of the police and judicial system who takes the law into their own hands. In some neighborhoods, such as Essence residents have organized night patrols to deter crime, leading to extreme measures against suspected criminals. In recent times, there have been reports of alleged robbers being burned alive by vigilante groups.
The prevalence of such acts is attributed to the lack of trust in the legal system where corruption and inefficiency are rampant. Many residents believe that turning suspects over to the police is futile as they are often released without consequence. This has led to a dangerous cycle of violence and retribution which also undermines the rule of law and endangering innocent lives.
Authorities and human rights organizations have condemned these acts of mob justice and has urged for reforms in the legal and law enforcement systems to restore public trust and ensure that justice is served through proper legal channels.
