The Methodist Church Ghana has elected a new Presiding Bishop, Very Rev. Professor Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu.
The election took place on Saturday, August 31, 2024, during the 51st and 13th Biennial Conference of the Church, which is currently ongoing at the Wesley Methodist Church in Kumasi of the Kumasi Diocese.
Very Rev. Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu, who is the President of the Trinity Theological Seminary at Legon in Accra, emerged victorious in the closely contested election. He secured 226 votes, representing 53.33% of the total votes cast. His closest competitor, Right Rev. Michael Agyarkwa Bossman, garnered 99 votes, accounting for 23.8% of the votes. The third candidate, Right Rev. Professor Manasseh Edusa-Eyison, who serves as the Bishop of the Northern Accra Diocese of the Church, had 82 votes, representing 19.7% of the total votes cast.
The election of Very Rev. Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu marks a significant moment in the history of the Methodist Church Ghana. He is set to succeed the Most Rev. Paul K. Boafo, the outgoing Presiding Bishop, whose tenure has witness remarkable achievements and contributions to the growth of the Church. The transition in leadership is expected to usher in a new phase of spiritual and administrative guidance under the stewardship of Very Rev. Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu.
In his acceptance speech, the Presiding Bishop-elect expressed deep gratitude to God and the delegates for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the Church. He emphasized the importance of unity and collective effort in fulfilling the mission and vision of the Church in the coming years. “It is the Lord who has spoken through you. I promise that I will serve with all my heart,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to serving with dedication and humility.
Very Rev. Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu also called on the members of the Methodist Church Ghana to work together in discerning and carrying out God’s will for the Church. He pledged to lead with a servant’s heart, ensuring that the Church remains focused on its spiritual mandate and continues to make a positive impact on society. “Together, we will find, follow, and do what God’s will is for the next six years,” he added, signaling his intent to foster a collaborative and purposeful leadership approach.
As the Methodist Church Ghana prepares to enter a new chapter under the leadership of Very Rev. Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu, the Church community and its members look forward to a period of continued growth, spiritual renewal, and service to God and humanity.
