SAD: Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, Asanti Mamponghene Dies at 85

The Paramount Chief of the Asante Mampong Traditional Area, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, has died at the age of 85 according to Ghanaweb. His demise announced by traditional authorities marks the end of a reign that lasted nearly three decades. He was born Saint Oswald Gyimah Kessie on December 31, 1939, in Mampong. Daasebre Osei Bonsu II pursued higher education at Prempeh College and the University of Ghana, Legon. He later earned a law degree and worked for years as an administrator at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he eventually became Registrar.

In August 1996, he was enstooled as Mamponghene as he succeeded his uncle Nana Atakora Amaniampong II. His time on the Silver Stool was notable for maintaining relative stability in Mampong without major chieftaincy disputes which is a significant achievement in a region often challenged by succession issues. In 1999, he briefly served as Regent of the Asante Kingdom during the transition after the death of Otumfuo Opoku Ware II.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was involved in initiatives to support education, local development, and environmental conservation. He actively opposed illegal mining (galamsey) in the area as he cited the need to protect Mampong’s water sources and land for future generations.   In 2013, KNUST awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his public service. A statue in his honor was unveiled in 2023 which commemorates his contributions to the community.
