Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has been re-elected as the Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament, marking the continuation of his distinguished service to the country’s legislature.
Having served as the Speaker of the 8th Parliament of Ghana, Rt. Hon. Bagbin played a pivotal role in handling the complexities of a hung parliament, a situation that demanded exceptional leadership, diplomacy, and the ability to foster consensus among members of opposing political divides. His tenure in the 8th Parliament earned him widespread recognition for his impartiality and dedication to parliamentary democracy.
Ahead of his re-election, John Dramani Mahama, the President-elect from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections, appealed to NDC members in Parliament to rally behind Rt. Hon. Bagbin’s candidacy. Mahama lauded his leadership qualities and emphasized the need for continuity to strengthen Ghana’s legislative processes.
In his acceptance speech, Rt. Hon. Bagbin expressed profound gratitude to John Dramani Mahama for the trust and confidence reposed in him. He pledged to justify this faith by building on the achievements of his previous term and striving for a more effective and inclusive Parliament. “I am deeply honored by this re-election and the opportunity to serve as Speaker for a second term. My success in leading the 8th Parliament has undoubtedly laid the foundation for this confidence in my leadership,” he remarked.
He further extended his gratitude to all elected Members of Parliament and the Ghanaian people for their continued support. He assured them of his commitment to upholding the integrity of the legislative body while fostering transparency, accountability, and national development.
