The Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) has appealed to the government to increase the teacher trainee allowance from GH¢400 to GH¢1,000 per month.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting, PRINCOF President Professor Samuel Awinkene Atintono argued that the current amount is insufficient to meet the basic needs of students, particularly food. He revealed that trainees currently survive on just GH¢8 per day for meals — an amount he described as unsustainable.
Professor Atintono suggested that, with a revised allowance, students could take charge of their own feeding arrangements to improve their welfare.
In response, Ghana’s Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, assured the principals that the government is reviewing the concerns and will act swiftly. He acknowledged the infrastructural and logistical challenges facing colleges of education and pledged government intervention.
“We are committed to reviewing the allowance and responding to your concerns,” the Minister stated.
The teacher trainee allowance remains a key policy issue in Ghana, especially as the government seeks to enhance teacher training and retention across the country.
