An activist affiliated with Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mohammed Zakou, has been granted bail of GHS100,000 after he was arrested for posting false news about Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Zakou’s Facebook post, which read “Rest well, Her Excellency,” went viral on 12 April, sparking public confusion. At the time, the Vice President was only reported to be unwell—not deceased.

The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) arrested Zakou for spreading misinformation and charged him with publishing false news likely to cause public fear and alarm.
At the Achimota Circuit Court, prosecutors said Zakou admitted to the post but described it as a “harmless message.” The court granted him bail with two sureties and instructed him to report to investigators every week.
The case will continue on 12 May 2025.
