The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has issued a press statement following Coach Laryea Kingston’s sudden resignation on Saturday, May 25, 2024.

According to the press statement, the GFA emphasized that it has taken note of the decision by the Head Coach of the National U-17 Team, the Black Starlets, Laryea Kingston, to leave the team. This decision came after his behavior following the WAFU Zone B U-17 qualifier semifinal match against Burkina Faso on May 25, 2024. The GFA acknowledged Kingston’s resignation and noted that his subsequent actions have reinforced his decision.

The statement detailed the series of events leading to Kingston’s resignation. It reported that Coach Kingston announced his resignation to the players and the coaching staff using inappropriate language. He reiterated his decision during the post-match press conference, further solidifying the gravity of the situation. Additionally, Coach Kingston got off the bus while the team was on its way to their hotel, failing to attend the team’s evening meeting with the Management Committee. Since then, he has not reported back to the team hotel.

The GFA expressed concern over Kingston’s abrupt departure and the manner in which it was handled. They highlighted the importance of maintaining professionalism and decorum, especially in the context of national team duties. The association emphasized that such behavior is not in line with the values and standards expected of those in leadership positions within the national teams.

The Way Forward

The GFA has outlined immediate steps to ensure the team remains focused and prepared for upcoming matches. The Assistant Coaches will take charge of the team, with support from the Technical Directors, for the third-place play-off match between Ghana and Nigeria, scheduled to be played on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

In light of this situation, the GFA is also reviewing its protocols and support systems for coaches to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The GFA acknowledged Coach Laryea Kingston’s efforts and achievements with the team over the past months, which included a strong performance in the WAFU Zone B U-17 tournament.

While the team prepares for the upcoming match against Nigeria, the GFA calls on all stakeholders, including fans, to rally behind the Black Starlets.
