Prof. Amin Alhassan, the Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), has firmly denied claims made by Hon. Mustapha Ussif, the Minister of Youth and Sports, regarding the financial benefit GBC received for its coverage of the 13th African Games.

On Monday, August 19, 2024, during his appearance before the Public Accounts Committee, Minister Ussif had stated that GBC had received approximately $3 million for its coverage of the All African Games held in Accra.

In response to a query about the payment made to GBC for its coverage of the Games, Minister Ussif mentioned that the amount paid was around $3 million, referring to it as the benefit GBC received. He added,

He emphasized that “yes, GBC was the official broadcaster for the 13th African Games, I can’t remember the exact amount, but I know it’s in exceeds of $3 million.”

Prof. Alhassan has expressed surprise at this statement, emphasizing that GBC only received a total of $105,000 as its official benefit for being the broadcaster of the African Games. He clarified that no additional funds were received from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Prof. Alhassan reassured the public, stating, “I want to assure every Ghanaian that GBC’s total benefit from the All African Games was $105,000. No further payments were made to GBC as a benefit.”

He further explained that the $105,000 was allocated to support GBC’s decision to dedicate an entire channel to the African Games. This decision involved suspending regular programming on GTV Sports Plus to provide comprehensive coverage of the event.

Prof. Alhassan’s clarification aims to address any confusion arising from the Minister’s statements and to provide the details of GBC’s financial involvement in the coverage of the All African Games.
