The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a press release to the general public, announcing its decision to boycott parliamentary proceedings. This follows the Speaker of Parliament’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
The letter reads as follows:
“The leadership of the New Patriotic Party has been briefed by the Majority Caucus regarding its decision to refrain from participating in parliamentary business in protest of certain illegal and unconstitutional actions carried out by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Alban Bagbin. Accordingly, the Party has resolved to offer its unflinching support to the Majority Caucus in their fight against this politically motivated injustice.
The Party further urges its Members of Parliament who are contesting as parliamentary candidates to take advantage of this boycott period to strengthen their campaigns in their respective constituencies, in pursuit of our overarching goal of securing a third consecutive general election victory in December 2024.
It is well known that the Ghanaian public, among other concerns, hopes to avoid a repetition of the chaotic disruptions that have characterized the 8th Parliament when the 9th Parliament is constituted. Undoubtedly, this can only be achieved by securing an overwhelming parliamentary majority in December 2024, which will enable our Presidential Candidate, when elected, to perform his duties without unnecessary, petty, and partisan obstacles.
The Party wishes all its candidates the best in the final stretch of their campaigns as we work towards victory on December 7, 2024.
May God bless our homeland Ghana and protect our Parliament from undemocratic abuses.”
