Reverend Isaac Owusu, President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has strongly opposed the directive issued by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) regarding the revocation of new recruitments.
This was revealed in an interview with JoyNews during a session with Rev. Isaac Owusu.
According to Rev. Owusu, the directive in question, which was issued following an order by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, pertains specifically to individuals recruited and appointed into public institutions after December 7, 2025. He emphasized that this directive should not be applied indiscriminately to all recruits under GES, particularly those who were employed through due process and are awaiting placement on the payroll.
Rev. Owusu expressed concern over the implementation of the directive, urging the Director-General of GES, Professor Ernest Kofi Davies, to reconsider its scope and content. He highlighted that several newly recruited teachers had undergone legitimate recruitment procedures within the past three to six months but had yet to be placed on the payroll due to administrative delays. He stressed that it would be unfair and unjust to abruptly terminate their appointments without due consideration of their circumstances.
Rev. Owusu advised Prof. Davies to consult his two Deputy Director-Generals and the Human Resources (HR) department to obtain a comprehensive master list of all newly recruited staff under GES. He pointed out that all recruitments within the GES are managed at the headquarters, making it unnecessary to delegate the task of compiling the affected names to Regional, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors. He described such an approach as ambiguous and potentially chaotic.
The GNAT President has admonished GES Director General, stating that should any affected member of the association file a petition against the directive, the union would not hesitate to take action. He assured GNAT members that they would fight rigorously to ensure justice and fairness for all affected individuals.
Additionally, Rev. Owusu called on the GES Director-General to immediately reconsider and reverse the revocation decision to prevent any potential industrial unrest within the education sector. He stressed that such a move could provoke widespread agitation among teachers and disrupt the education system.
He reiterated that the fundamental role of GNAT and other teacher unions is to safeguard the social and economic welfare of their members. He affirmed that the union remains committed to defending the rights of teachers and will not stand by while its members face unfair treatment.
Rev. Owusu appealed to GES leadership to engage in further consultations with stakeholders before implementing any directive that could have far-reaching consequences.
