Nana Akufo-Addo, the President of Ghana, was honored to deliver an address at the Green Ghana Day Celebration on Friday, 7th June 2024, at Burma Camp. The theme for the event was “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow.”
In his address, the President emphasized that the loss of biodiversity is a significant threat to global development and progress, leading to the loss of plants, and animals and ecosystems. He indicated that global climate change is alarming and calls for immediate action to counteract this adverse trend. Forests play an essential role in maintaining ecological balance, and preserving them is crucial.
Referring to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Dubai last year, the President highlighted the launch of new strategies to combat the adverse impacts of global climate change, particularly in Africa. He stressed on the importance of these efforts in mitigating climate change’s severe effects on the continent.
President Akufo-Addo announced that Ghana has planted approximately 42 million trees over the past three years. The country aims to plant an additional 10 million trees this year, bringing the total to 52 million trees in four years. This ambitious target demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to environmental conservation and combating climate change.
The President called on all Ghanaians to participate in this national effort, regardless of their profession or background. He urged teachers, farmers, doctors, politicians, businesspeople, and others to grab a tree, plant it, and nurture it to maturity. He emphasized that collective action is crucial for the success of the Green Ghana initiative.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted the vital role of the private sector in supporting and embracing the Green Ghana project. He called for collaboration between the government and private enterprises to ensure the project’s success. The President expressed confidence that with everyone’s participation, Ghana can achieve its vision of a greener and more sustainable future.
The vision for a Greener Ghana requires collective effort to make the country more viable for current and future generations. His call to action for all Ghanaians, as well as the private sector, to participate in tree planting and nurturing initiatives, served as reminder of the collective responsibility to protect and preserve the environment for future generations.
The theme “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow” encapsulated the essence of the event and the vision for a sustainable and environmentally friendly Ghana. As Ghana continues to strive towards a greener future, the participation and collaboration of all citizens will be instrumental in realizing this vision, President Akufo-Addo stated.
