The Ashanti Regional Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES-Ashanti) is preparing to celebrate International Menstrual Hygiene Day in grand style. International Menstrual Hygiene Day will be celebrated globally on May 28, 2024. The theme for the celebration is ”Together for a Period Friendly World.”
Prior to this celebration, the GES-Ashanti organized a workshop for all its Girl-Child Coordinators and the School Health Education Programme (SHEP) Coordinators within the region. This workshop was a crucial part of the lead-up to International Menstrual Hygiene Day, as it aimed to equip the coordinators with the knowledge and tools needed to educate their communities effectively.
Madam Hannah, the Regional Girl-Child Coordinator for GES-Ashanti, took the lead in this initiative. She tasked all the 43 Girl-Child Coordinators and SHEP Coordinators to celebrate this year’s International Menstrual Hygiene Day in their respective districts. This effort is designed to educate not only the girls but also the broader community about the importance of menstrual hygiene. The goal is to foster a better understanding of menstrual health and reduce the stigma often associated with menstruation.
To support these efforts, the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate donated sanitary pads to the coordinators. These pads are to be distributed to learners on International Menstrual Hygiene Day, which is observed on May 28, 2024.

Information received suggests that the song was composed and sung by Madam Theresa Davis, School Health Education Programme Coordinator of Afigya Kwabre South District in the Ashanti region of Ghana, and recorded by Strange Tunez Music
The song released by GES-Ashanti is a central part of this year’s celebrations. Through the Regional Girl-Child Coordinator, the Directorate is encouraging District Girl-Child Coordinators and SHEP Coordinators to teach the song to their learners. This initiative is designed to create a sense of unity and shared purpose across the region. By learning and singing the song, students will engage more deeply with the message of menstrual hygiene and the theme “Together for a Period Friendly World.”
The GES-Ashanti is encouraging coordinators to share videos of students singing the song in various ways on social media. These videos will highlight the students’ participation and also spread the message of menstrual hygiene to a wider audience. Coordinators are also expected to send copies of these videos to the Regional Girl-Child Coordinator or the Regional SHEP Coordinator, allowing for a comprehensive collection of the celebrations across the region.
This and many other interesting programs are happening under the leadership of Dr. William Kwame Amankra, the Regional Director of Education for the Ashanti region of Ghana.
The anticipation for this year’s International Menstrual Hygiene Day is evident within the GES-Ashanti. The Directorate is committed to making the celebration significant and impactful. The GES-Ashanti aims to celebrate in grand style and ensure that the message of menstrual hygiene reaches far and wide.
