President Mahama Releases GHS 300 Million for Flood Relief and Mitigation Following Accra Floods

Accra Flooding

The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate release of GHS 300 million from the Contingency Fund to support flood relief and mitigation efforts following the recent heavy rains that caused widespread flooding in parts of Accra and other communities in the southern Ghana.

The announcement was made in an official statement issued by the Presidency Communications on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, indicating that President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance to ensure the immediate disbursement of the funds to address the emergency.

Following hours of unusually heavy rainfall that submerged homes, displaced residents, disrupted transportation, and destroyed property in several parts of Accra and surrounding communities, the government has taken decisive steps to provide immediate assistance to affected victims.

According to the statement, the emergency intervention forms part of government’s broader response to reduce the impact of the floods while strengthening measures to prevent similar disasters in the future.

The President’s directive demonstrates government’s commitment to protecting lives, supporting affected families, and restoring normalcy in flood-hit communities.

Breakdown of the GHS 300 Million Relief Package

The released amount has been divided into two major components to address both immediate humanitarian needs and long-term flood prevention measures.

GHS 150 Million for Emergency Relief

Out of the total amount, GHS 150 million has been allocated to finance urgent relief efforts for persons and communities affected by the floods.

The funds are expected to support:

  • Distribution of relief items to affected households.
  • Temporary shelter for displaced persons.
  • Medical assistance and emergency healthcare.
  • Food and water supply.
  • Rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure.
  • Other humanitarian interventions.

This allocation is intended to provide immediate support to victims as authorities continue assessment and recovery operations.

GHS 150 Million for Flood Mitigation Measures

The remaining GHS 150 million will be invested in flood mitigation projects aimed at reducing the frequency and severity of flooding across vulnerable communities.

These mitigation measures are expected to include:

  • Improvement of drainage systems.
  • Desilting of gutters and waterways.
  • Construction of flood-control infrastructure.
  • Engineering works in flood-prone communities.
  • Other preventive interventions to minimize future flood disasters.

Government believes that combining emergency relief with long-term mitigation strategies will help build more resilient communities.

Ghana Armed Forces and Police Deployed

As part of the emergency response, President Mahama has also directed the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service to support ongoing rescue and relief operations.

The security agencies are working together with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency response institutions to:

  • Rescue stranded residents.
  • Evacuate flood victims from affected communities.
  • Deliver relief supplies.
  • Maintain law and order.
  • Assist in recovery operations.

The coordinated response is expected to improve emergency operations and ensure that assistance reaches affected communities as quickly as possible.

President Conducts Aerial Assessment

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, July 30, 2026, President Mahama undertook an aerial tour of the flooded areas to assess the full extent of the destruction caused by the heavy rains.

The aerial inspection enabled the President to observe the impact of the flooding firsthand and receive briefings from relevant agencies on the ongoing rescue efforts.

Following the assessment, the President announced several interventions aimed at protecting residents and preventing further flooding in the affected areas.

Residents are encouraged to cooperate with emergency response teams, observe safety directives, and avoid flood-prone areas as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
