Education Minister Urges UTAG to Stay Committed Against Galamsey Despite Political Changes

The Ministry of Education Ghana has announced the formation of a three-member committee to investigate concerns raised by the University Teachers Association of Ghana. The decision follows issues highlighted by UTAG during a recent press conference, drawing national attention to matters affecting tertiary education in Ghana.

In a press statement dated 13th April 2026, the Ministry indicated that the move is aimed at ensuring a thorough and informed response to the concerns raised by UTAG. The committee has been tasked to examine the allegations and provide recommendations for appropriate action.

According to the statement, the committee will submit its findings to John Dramani Mahama, who will consider the recommendations in addressing the issues. The initiative reflects government’s commitment to resolving challenges within the tertiary education sector through dialogue and due process.

The committee is chaired by the Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Apaak, and includes George K. T. Oduro, Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Education, and Mahama Duwiejua, Board Chairman of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

The Ministry has appealed to all stakeholders, including UTAG and other interested parties, to cooperate fully with the committee as it undertakes its work. Officials emphasised that collaboration is key to ensuring a fair and balanced outcome.

The statement further reaffirmed government’s commitment to constructive engagement and dialogue in addressing the concerns raised. It stressed the importance of maintaining stability within the tertiary education system while efforts are made to resolve outstanding issues.

Education authorities noted that the outcome of the committee’s work will play a critical role in shaping future decisions that affect universities and lecturers across the country. The move is expected to bring clarity and direction to the ongoing concerns.
