Government Declares Wednesdays for Wearing Fugu to Promote Ghanaian Culture

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, has announced a nationwide initiative encouraging the wearing of Fugu (Batakari) every Wednesday. The declaration forms part of a broader strategy to preserve, promote, and celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural identity while stimulating growth within the creative arts sector.

In a formal statement dated 10th February 2026, the Ministry called on all Ghanaians, as well as friends of Ghana both at home and abroad, to dedicate Wednesdays to wearing Fugu in its diverse designs, forms, and expressions. The initiative also highlights the use of traditional accessories that complement the attire’s cultural significance.

According to the Ministry, the move is aimed at deepening national cultural awareness and affirming Ghana’s identity on the global stage. By adopting Fugu as a regular symbol of national pride, the government seeks to project Ghana’s heritage with confidence while encouraging cultural self-expression among citizens.

Beyond its symbolic importance, the initiative is expected to generate wide-ranging social and economic benefits. The Ministry noted that increased demand for Fugu would empower local weavers, designers, artisans, and traders across the textile and fashion value chain, creating employment opportunities and expanding commercial activity nationwide.

The declaration also aligns with government efforts to strengthen the creative economy by supporting indigenous industries and promoting locally made products. Officials believe that a collective embrace of Ghanaian attire will translate into sustained economic growth and increased recognition of local craftsmanship.

Additionally, the Ministry expressed hope that the initiative would foster national unity by encouraging citizens from all regions and backgrounds to participate in a shared cultural practice that reflects Ghana’s history and values.

The declaration was signed by Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP), Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, who reaffirmed government’s commitment to using culture as a tool for national development, identity, and pride.
