NUGS Executives Engage Education Minister on Student Representation and Key Sector Reforms

NUGS engages Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

On Tuesday, 27th January 2026, the Executives of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) paid a courtesy call on the Honourable Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, for a cordial and highly constructive engagement on issues of critical importance to Ghanaian students.

According to reports, one of the major issue discussed at the meeting was the call for the inclusion of a student representative on the Scholarship Authority Board, aimed at strengthening student participation and ensuring that the perspectives and interests of students are adequately represented in scholarship administration and policy decisions.

In his response, the Honourable Minister, who is a former President of NUGS, explained that the current composition of the Scholarship Authority Board was arrived at after extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including the immediate past leadership of NUGS. He assured the Union that future amendments to the Board’s structure would be carried out in a deliberate and intentional manner, with due consideration given to securing representation for NUGS.

The engagement also covered several pressing matters within the education sector. These included discussions on the ongoing Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) strike and the pathways towards its resolution, the establishment of a permanent National Secretariat for NUGS, the resourcing and capacity strengthening of the Union, as well as plans for convening NUGS’ inaugural Central Committee Meeting.

The National Union of Ghana Students expressed its profound gratitude to the Honourable Minister of Education for his openness, continued engagement, and mentorship. The Union also appreciated his assurances to work towards resolving all issues raised during the meeting and reaffirms its highest respect, cooperation, and commitment to collaborating with the Ministry in advancing the welfare and interests of Ghanaian students.
