Ghana has formally begun investigations into the recent crash of a Z-9 military helicopter in the Ashanti Region, Acting Defence Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced. The crash, which claimed the lives of eight military personnel, has been described as one of the darkest moments for the Ghana Armed Forces in recent years.
Dr. Forson revealed that the National Security Coordinator has been tasked to chair the Investigative Board set up to probe the tragic incident. The Board is expected to uncover the circumstances surrounding the crash and make recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
In a significant development, the U.S. Air Force will provide advisory support and technical assistance to the Ghanaian investigators. This partnership is seen as a move to ensure that the investigation benefits from international expertise in aviation safety and military operations.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Acting Defence Minister stressed the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in uncovering the truth behind the crash. “We owe it to the fallen heroes, their families, and the nation to establish the facts and prevent such tragedies from happening again,” he said.
The crash, which occurred during a routine mission, has sparked nationwide grief and tributes to the eight officers who lost their lives. Their sacrifice has been hailed as an act of duty and service to Ghana.
Families of the victims have been assured of government’s support throughout the investigation and beyond. The Defence Ministry noted that counselling and welfare packages are being provided to assist them through this period of loss.
The Investigative Board is expected to deliver its preliminary findings in the coming weeks. Until then, the country waits in hope that the truth will bring closure and lessons for the future of Ghana’s military aviation.
