President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to put aside political differences and come together in solidarity following the recent tragedy that has shaken the nation.
Speaking in a heartfelt address, the President stressed that the current moment demands strength, understanding, and compassion rather than division or political point-scoring.
“This is not a time for division, speculation, or political point-scoring, but a time for strength and empathy,” he said.
His appeal comes as the country mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the emotional and social impact of the incident. President Mahama urged citizens, leaders, and institutions to focus on supporting affected families and communities, rather than engaging in blame or political rhetoric.
According to the President, Books of Condolence will be opened from Sunday, 10th August to Thursday, 14th August at the Ministries of Defence, Environment, and Foreign Affairs, as well as at the headquarters of the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). These locations will provide an opportunity for the public to pay their respects and express their sympathies to the families of the deceased.
The President announced that an inter-denominational state funeral will be held for the eight victims at the Black Star Square on Friday, 15th August. The ceremony is expected to draw mourners from across the country, including dignitaries, religious leaders, and members of the public, in a united show of grief and respect.
Across the country, messages of condolence and solidarity have poured in from civil society groups, faith leaders, and ordinary citizens, reflecting a shared sense of grief and a desire to stand together in difficult times.
The President emphasised that national unity and compassion are essential for the healing process and for ensuring that the nation emerges stronger from the tragedy.
