The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, has visited the newly proposed market project site in Aflao, located in the Volta Region.
According to reports, the purpose of the Chinese Ambassador’s visit was to inspect land earmarked for the construction of an ultramodern market with ancillary facilities, to be funded by the recently secured US$30 million grant from China.
His Excellency Tong Defa was accompanied by Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for North Tongu, and Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and MP for Ketu South.

In a brief address, the Chinese Ambassador emphasized China’s readiness to support developmental projects in Ghana, particularly in the Volta Region.
It was revealed at the event that the Aflao Traditional Area has allocated 159 acres of land for the project.
Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa stressed that President Mahama is fulfilling a promise he made during his campaign for the 2024 elections through the construction of this ultramodern market. According to him, the market will boost ECOWAS trade, accelerate regional integration, promote the laudable objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), create massive employment opportunities, and transform the historic trading enclave of Aflao.

Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed gratitude to Togbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V, Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, other traditional leaders, and the good people of Aflao for generously allocating land for the market’s construction.
