Ghana has warmly welcomed India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who arrived in Accra on Wednesday, July 2, a two day official visit, his first visit to Ghana and the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over 30 years.

President John Dramani Mahama received Prime Minister Modi at his private residence, describing the visit as “historic” and a strong testament to the deepening friendship between Ghana and India. The two leaders are expected to engage in wide-ranging discussions to strengthen bilateral cooperation across key sectors including trade, education, health, infrastructure, and technology.

“This visit is not just symbolic, it is a signal of renewed collaboration and a future of shared progress,” President Mahama remarked. “We look forward to deep, productive dialogue that advances the mutual interests of our peoples.”
Prime Minister Modi’s trip is part of a broader diplomatic effort to expand India’s partnerships across Africa. In Ghana, his engagements will include high-level talks, participation in a Ghana–India Business Forum, and cultural events aimed at reaffirming people-to-people ties.

India has been a longstanding development partner to Ghana, supporting initiatives in capacity building, agriculture, and technology. Trade between the two nations has grown steadily, and officials say this visit presents an opportunity to unlock even greater potential.
For many Ghanaians, especially those with family, educational, or business ties to India, the visit is deeply significant. It is expected to open new doors for cooperation and investment that will benefit communities across both nations.
