Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced that the National Identification Authority (NIA) will soon commence issuing the Ghana Card in schools across the country. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure every Ghanaian has access to the Ghana Card, which is crucial for the ongoing digitalization of the nation’s economy.
Dr. Bawumia made this revelation during a press conference held on Sunday, 25th August 2024, where he engaged with members of the media. He highlighted the importance of the Ghana Card in creating a unified and efficient digital economy, emphasizing that the card is not just a form of identification but a vital component in the government’s vision for a digitized Ghana.
He pointed out that the NIA has already issued the Ghana Card to 18 million Ghanaians, a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey. However, the government is determined to reach every citizen, including students, who are integral to the country’s future workforce.
Dr. Bawumia further emphasized that the success of the Fourth Industrial Revolution hinges on an economy equipped with digitized data and systems. He proudly noted that Ghana is leading this agenda, becoming the first country in the world to issue a national identification card to newborn babies at birth, alongside their birth certificates.
The move to extend Ghana Card issuance to schools is expected to accelerate the registration process, ensuring that the nation’s youth are prepared to participate fully in the digital economy, Dr. Bawumia stated.
Dr. Bawumia’s announcement reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to leveraging technology to drive development and improve the lives of all Ghanaians.
