Free Sanitary Pads for Ghana’s Female Students in Primary and Secondary Schools

Girls in Ghanaian schools should not have to miss school anymore due to inability to afford sanitary pads. This is due to government’s initiative of allocating funds for the distribution of free sanitary pads to female students in primary and secondary schools.

Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, who is the current deputy minister in charge of education and also doubles as the member of parliament for Builsa South constituency, in a post on his official X account, reaffirmed this commitment by government. His post has sparked conversation on transparency and distribution. While many of his followers are applauding this move by the NDC government, others are raising concerns about how those in charge can ensure that the pads reach the intended beneficiaries.

A user, Kombatt-2, urged authorities to brand the sanitary pads uniquely to prevent them from being resold on the market. He also called for strict scrutiny of requests and allocations to prevent pilfering and misuse.

Another follower, “the Karisa Foundation” inquired about the possibility of orphanages benefiting from the program, which draws attentions to the need for broader inclusion.

As Ghanaian await the full rollout of this initiative, all “eyes are watching” with keen interest to see how the pads will be distributed fairly to see to it that the girls who need them most receive them.
