Effutu Municipality, specifically Winneba, has hosted the 2024 Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament for the 4th time. The meeting is scheduled to start on Monday, 29th July 2024, and conclude on Friday, 2nd August 2024.
During this period, the engagement is expected to address and strengthen collective efforts geared towards economic stability among its member states. ECOWAS, established by the heads of state of fifteen West African countries, includes Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Togo, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, and Senegal.
The aim of ECOWAS is to harmonize and coordinate national policies and promote integration programs, projects, and activities in various sectors. These sectors include food, agriculture and natural resources, industry, transport and communications, human resources, education, information, culture, energy, trade, money and finance, taxation, economic reform policies, science, technology, services, health, tourism, and legal matters, among others.
The ECOWAS Parliament, also known as the Community Parliament, is one of the institutions of ECOWAS. It serves as the Assembly of Peoples of the Community, functioning as a forum for dialogue, consultation, and consensus for the representatives of the people of West Africa. The aim of the Parliament is to promote integration among member states. The Parliament is composed of one hundred and fifteen seats. Each member state is guaranteed a minimum of five seats, while the remaining forty seats are distributed based on population.
