Champions League: Liverpool’s Victory Over Lille Secures Champions League Knockout Spot”

Liverpool secured their place in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages with a 2-1 victory over Lille at Anfield on January 21, 2025. The win not only maintained their perfect record in the competition but also ensured they topped the new 36-team league phase.

The Reds took the lead in the 34th minute when Mohamed Salah netted his 21st goal of the season, becoming Liverpool’s highest European goal scorer with 50 goals.   Lille’s challenges intensified just before the hour mark when defender Aïssa Mandi received a red card for a second bookable offense. Despite being reduced to ten men, Lille equalized three minutes later through Jonathan David. However, Liverpool regained the lead five minutes thereafter with Harvey Elliott’s deflected strike securing the victory.

This triumph marked Liverpool’s seventh consecutive European win which  matching their best sequence ever.  Additionally, captain Virgil van Dijk equaled a 42 year club record by achieving his 35th win in his first 50 European Cup/Champions League appearances, matching the record set by Phil Neal.   Manager Arne Slot’s strategic rotations  due to player injuries and rest  did not affect performance levels, as Liverpool remained unbeaten at home in the Champions League this season.  The team will conclude the group stage with an away match against PSV Eindhoven having already secured their progression
