In a significant move for both his career and Ghanaian football, 18 year old striker Jerry Afriyie has joined Spanish club CD Lugo on loan from Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah FC. Afriyie, who has been lauded as one of Ghana’s most promising talents, will wear the number 19 jersey during his tenure with the Spanish outfit.
Born on December 10, 2006, Afriyie’s journey began in the Tano North Municipal District, where he showcased his burgeoning talent with local side Thoughts FC. His exceptional performances did not go unnoticed but led to a three year contract with Al-Qadsiah FC on January 23, 2025. Shortly thereafter, on January 25, 2025, he was loaned to CD Lugo, signaling the club’s confidence in his potential to make an impact in European football.
Afriyie’s prowess on the field earned him a call up to the Ghana U20 national team in 2023. He played an important role in the Black Satellites’ success at the 13th African Games held in Ghana, where the team clinched the gold medal against Uganda. His standout performances continued at the 2024 WAFU B U-20 Championship in Togo, where he was honored as the Best Player and secured the Golden Boot with five goals in five matches, leading Ghana to a commendable second place finish behind Nigeria.
November 2024 marked a historic milestone for Afriyie. He became the first player from Ghana’s third tier league to receive a senior national team call up. Making his debut in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger on November 16, 2024, Afriyie made an immediate impact by scoring, although Ghana narrowly lost 1-2. Afriyie’s move to CD Lugo represents a strategic step in his development providing him with the opportunity to gain invaluable experience in European football. The Spanish club which is competing in the Primera Federación is keen to integrate Afriyie’s dynamic attacking skills into their lineup as they aim for promotion.
