Akua Donkor, founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has reportedly passed away at age 72.
Born in February 1952 in Afigya Kwabre in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, Akua Donkor was a notable figure in Ghanaian politics, known for her dedication to representing the rural community. She was a farmer with no formal education.
Sources indicate that Akua Donkor died on Monday, October 28, 2024, at Ridge Hospital in Accra, where she was receiving treatment. Her passing has left many Ghanaians in shock and grief, particularly as the nation approaches the December general election, which is now just 39 days away.
In the 2024 presidential race, she was listed as the third candidate on the ballot, continuing her tradition of actively participating in Ghana’s democratic process.
Akua Donkor’s journey in politics began in 2012 when she founded the Ghana Freedom Party to advocate for the rights of the poor and the need to close the gap between the rich and the poor. Despite facing numerous challenges, Akua remained committed to her goals, running in multiple presidential elections. Her platform focused on supporting farmers, women, and youth, with initiatives like accessible loans for women and assistance for those jailed due to loan debt.
