Bernard Ahiafor Elected to Lead IPU Democracy and Human Rights Committee

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament of Ghana, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, has been elected President of the Democracy and Human Rights Committee for the African Geopolitical Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

His election took place at the ongoing 150th Assembly of the IPU in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where global parliamentary representatives have gathered from 5th to 9th April 2025.

The Democracy and Human Rights Committee plays a key role in identifying and addressing pressing issues related to democratic governance and fundamental rights. It also proposes actions for parliaments globally through annual political resolutions adopted by the full IPU membership.

Hon. Ahiafor’s new role positions him to lead dialogue and initiatives on behalf of Africa within this influential international platform.
