The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South West District in the Ashanti Region, Hon. Abubakar Sedik, has died after a brief illness.
Mr. Sedik died on the evening of Sunday, September 20, 2026, after participating in official engagements in Kumasi involving the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga.
According to reports, the DCE returned to Mankranso, the district capital, after the engagements and subsequently fell ill. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
The engagements in Kumasi included a meeting involving local government officials and stakeholders on developments concerning the Kejetia Phase Two project.
Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council mourns
The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, in an obituary issued on behalf of the Government of Ghana, announced the death with deep sorrow.
The Council described Mr. Sedik’s passing as a great loss to his family, the people of Ahafo Ano South West, the Ashanti Region and the nation.
It also commended his service to the district, describing him as having served with dedication, humility and commitment to the development of the district and the service of Ghana.
The Council extended condolences to his bereaved family, colleagues, traditional authorities and all who are mourning his passing.
Cause of death
Details surrounding the exact cause of Mr. Sedik’s death have not been officially confirmed.
Some media reports have stated that he complained of body pains after returning to Mankranso and was taken to hospital. Another report has referred to a possible heart attack, but noted that there was no immediate official medical confirmation.

His public service
Mr. Abubakar Sedik became District Chief Executive for Ahafo Ano South West in 2025. Before his appointment, he was the parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the constituency in the 2024 general election.
His death has been followed by messages of condolence from officials, residents and others in the district and the Ashanti Region.
The Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly also paid tribute to him, describing him as a person who served the people of the district with dedication.
Funeral arrangements and further details concerning his passing are yet to be announced.
