On Monday, 23rd September 2024, His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana, had the honor of receiving the Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award in New York City, on the sidelines of the 2024 UN General Assembly.
The President joyfully accepted this prestigious award on behalf of every Ghanaian, whose belief in a brighter future keeps pushing country forward, even in the face of challenges.
In his acceptance speech, President Akufo-Addo expressed his deep commitment to the shared values of democracy, justice, and global collaboration—principles that continue to guide him, even as he is about to end his tenure as President. “I remain deeply committed to our shared values of democracy, justice, and global collaboration – principles that will continue to guide me, even as I near the end of my tenure as President,” he stated.
The summit, themed “Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” also took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. During his address, President Akufo-Addo called for urgent and collective action to address the pressing global challenges of climate change, inequality, and the need for reform within the UN Security Council. He emphasized that no nation can tackle these issues alone and that solidarity among nations is essential.
Highlighting Africa’s unique position, he noted that while the continent contributes the least to global emissions, it bears the heaviest burden of climate change impacts. “It is time for fairness, not charity,” he asserted, advocating for equitable solutions that recognize the disproportionate challenges faced by African nations.
President Akufo-Addo concluded his remarks by urging global leaders to seize the moment and commit to building a more just and equitable future for all.
“Together, let us seize this moment and commit to building a more just and equitable future for all,” he said, inspiring hope and collaboration among the international community.
